Red Coins Bob Omb Battlefield

Super Mario 64 introduced players to a new dimension of platforming with expansive levels, hidden secrets, and collectible challenges. One of the earliest and most iconic stages is Bob-omb Battlefield, a grassy battlefield full of Goombas, Bob-ombs, cannons, and flying Koopa shells. Among its many challenges, the mission to collect all eight Red Coins stands out as a staple objective that teaches players exploration, movement, and environmental awareness. Understanding the layout and locations of the Red Coins in Bob-omb Battlefield can make the difference between casual collecting and speedrun efficiency.

Understanding the Red Coin Mission

What Are Red Coins?

Red Coins are special collectibles scattered throughout Mario’s world. In each level, there are eight Red Coins to find, and collecting all of them will reward you with a Power Star. Unlike regular yellow coins, Red Coins are always tied to specific challenges, and they encourage players to explore each corner of the stage.

The Bob-omb Battlefield Layout

Bob-omb Battlefield is the first course in the game, located through the first painting in Princess Peach’s Castle. The level features grassy hills, bridges, floating islands, and a looming mountain in the background. The design encourages players to learn controls, interact with objects, and explore vertically and horizontally.

All Red Coin Locations in Bob-omb Battlefield

Red Coin 1 – Near the Starting Bridge

As soon as you enter the level, run straight ahead toward the wooden bridge that leads into the main part of the battlefield. Just before crossing it, look to the left near the edge of the field. The first Red Coin is sitting in the open near a tree. It’s hard to miss and sets the tone for the rest of your search.

Red Coin 2 – On the Stone Platform

After crossing the bridge, follow the dirt path until you see a raised stone platform on the left side with Goombas wandering nearby. Use a well-timed jump or backflip to reach the platform and collect the second Red Coin sitting on top of it.

Red Coin 3 – On the Chain Chomp’s Post

This one requires a bit more risk. Near the metal fence and the Star cage is a Chain Chomp tied to a wooden post. Carefully dodge its lunges and make your way behind the post. The Red Coin is located right on the wooden peg. Wait for the Chomp to lunge away before grabbing it quickly.

Red Coin 4 – Underneath the Bridge

Backtrack slightly to the wooden bridge you crossed earlier. This time, go underneath it instead of over. You’ll find the fourth Red Coin hovering just below the bridge structure. Jump down and grab it, then climb back up using the nearby slope or ledges.

Red Coin 5 – By the Elevator Platforms

On the right side of the battlefield, you’ll notice a series of tilting platforms and a slope leading to the higher mountain path. Carefully maneuver across the moving platforms and collect the fifth Red Coin near the edge before you proceed upward.

Red Coin 6 – At the Floating Island (Using the Cannon)

This one requires unlocking the pink Bob-omb cannon. Speak with the friendly Bob-omb near the bridge to open the cannon lid. Once it’s ready, jump into the cannon located near the base of the mountain. Aim high and slightly to the right to reach the floating island. On the island, a Red Coin is waiting between two trees.

Red Coin 7 – Behind the Tree on the Island

While still on the floating island, circle around the trees. Another Red Coin is tucked away behind the second tree. Be cautious not to fall off the island. If you do, you’ll need to use the cannon to return again.

Red Coin 8 – Near the Rolling Balls on the Hill

As you climb the spiraling hill path leading to King Bob-omb’s summit, you’ll notice a narrow section with rolling black iron balls coming down. Midway through this section, stop at a small nook off to the right. The eighth Red Coin is located in this small crevice. Timing is key to avoid getting hit by the rolling hazards.

Tips for Collecting Red Coins Efficiently

Use the Wing Cap (Optional)

Once you’ve unlocked the Wing Cap in later missions, returning to Bob-omb Battlefield with it makes navigating to the floating island much easier. You can fly directly there from a cannon instead of aiming carefully.

Watch for Enemies

Goombas, Bob-ombs, and the Chain Chomp can deal damage and knock you off paths. Use jump attacks and ground pounds to clear enemies when needed. The camera angle also plays a big role, so use C-buttons or right-stick (depending on your version) to adjust the view.

Collect in a Loop

To optimize your route, start at the bottom with Red Coins 1-4, then move to the platforms for 5. Use the cannon for 6 and 7, and finish with 8 on your way up the mountain. This loop minimizes backtracking and keeps your health in check.

Why Red Coins Matter in Bob-omb Battlefield

They Teach Game Mechanics

Each Red Coin’s location teaches players different mechanics timing, jumping, enemy awareness, and environmental scanning. The mission encourages new players to use all available controls and experiment with level design elements.

They Encourage Exploration

Red Coin missions reward curiosity. Unlike linear objectives, this challenge motivates you to look behind trees, under bridges, and on floating platforms. It’s an excellent representation of what made Super Mario 64 revolutionary freedom and discovery.

They Provide a Power Star

Upon collecting all eight Red Coins, a Power Star appears at a fixed location. In Bob-omb Battlefield, it materializes on a Star marker near the Chain Chomp pen. Return to that spot to claim your reward and complete the mission.

A Classic Collectible Challenge

The Red Coins in Bob-omb Battlefield remain one of the most memorable challenges in Super Mario 64. They blend exploration with player skill and set the tone for similar missions throughout the game. From sneaking past a raging Chain Chomp to blasting onto a floating island, each coin tests a different part of Mario’s movement and spatial awareness. Whether you’re a completionist aiming for all 120 Stars or a nostalgic player revisiting this classic title, the Red Coin mission is a delightful journey through clever level design and engaging gameplay.
